Annotation This article introduces the special issue on the new history of European law. The authors believe that the important explanatory power provided by historical analysis is crucial for better understanding the institutions that govern our lives, how they came to be and how we might make more informed, more democratically conscious decisions in our public lives. Each of the individual contributions will be described and located in the new field of scholarship, and the intentions and current limitations of our findings will be delineated. Gaining a full picture of the development of European law requires skills, expertise and capacity beyond even the most prolific single academic.
