Annotation The issue of unilateral sanctions imposed unilaterally by individual states in the absence of relevant UN Security Council resolutions is studied. Arguments concerning the validity of unilateral coercive measures are thoroughly examined. The practice and consequences of imposing unilateral sanctions by a number of states, the trends of development and legitimacy of its existence in the light of development of modern international law are reviewed.
