Annotation The article offers a review of major stages of development of methodology of comparative and historical jurisprudence in the works of the Ukrainian and Russian scientist M. Kovalevskyi. The article researches the influence of Sir H. Maine’s studies on the genesis of scientific concept of Kovalevsky. The article provides an analysis of scientist’s works containing the basis of Kovalevskyi’s methodology of historical comparative legal studies, including reports on the 1st congress of the International Institute of Sociology (1894) and 1st International Congress of Comparative Law (1900). The article contains an evaluation of Kovalevsky’s input in the development of comparative legal research during the end of 19th century — beginning of 20th century based on the analysis of contemporaries’ views of Kovalevskyi’s works.
