Annotation | This article explains the focus and theoretical underpinnings of the University of Baltimore School of Law Center for Families, Children and the Courts (CFCC), which undertakes projects from the perspective of the law’s ability to intervene in a holistic manner to improve the lives of families and children. The article explains the development of CFCC’s Truancy Court Program (TCP), which partners with Maryland judges and Baltimore City Public Schools to operate a voluntary, early intervention, and non¬-adversarial program that identifies and addresses the reasons why a child is missing school. After explaining the laws related to truancy, the article concludes that the TCP is effective in lowering truancy rates, improving school performance, decreasing juvenile crime, increasing parent involvement in the child’s education, and expanding the range of services offered to students and their families. |
