Annotation | Marriage and the family have been transformed in the past 50 years by social as well as legal changes in the United States, including a significant series of constitutional rulings from the U.S. Supreme Court. After 50 years of change, current policy debates focus both on strengthening and supporting marriage, and on extending marriage rights to same¬-sex couples. Although the shape of marriage has changed, its fundamental importance to individuals and society has not, and the challenge for lawyers and policy¬makers is to preserve what has been constant and make room for the changes that will keep the institution of marriage alive and relevant into the future. |
Keywords | marriage policy, non-marital families, family gender roles, same-sex marriage. |
