Annotation Mandatory policies in domestic violence law in the United States prioritize the state’s goals of safety and batterer accountability over the goals of individual women looking for a way to address the violence in their relationships. The shift of decisionmaking authority has profoundly negative implications for the autonomy of women who have been battered. This Article argues mandatory policies are incredibly problematic for women subjected to abuse and suggests ways to craft a domestic violence law and policy that honors the goals and priorities of women who have been battered.
Keywords domestic violence, criminal law, women.
