Annotation | The United States Constitution guarantees the right to free exercise of religion. Whether that right includes the right to be exempted from generally applied legal obligations is controversial. In judging exemption claims based on religion, courts must often define whether a belief system qualifies as religious. This article discusses the problems posed by the need to define «religion» in free exercise cases. |
