Annotation The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution provides that «the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed». The Founders of the American Republic regarded an armed populace as a safeguard against tyranny. The Fourteenth Amendment was adopted in part to protect this right from violation by the states. The U.S. Supreme Court has held that individuals have a fundamental right to possess and carry the types of firearms that are commonly kept by law-abiding people for self-defense, hunting, and other lawful purposes.
