Annotation | The article discusses some aspects of freedom as a manifestation of human dignity in the Christian (Catholic and Orthodox) interpretation. Particular attention is paid to axiological criteria of true freedom of choice and the issue of responsibility therefor. The moral valued ambivalence of social freedom (as opposed to spiritual freedom) within the meaning of the Christian churches is emphasized. The provisions of official documents of the Russian Orthodox Church on freedom of conscience have negative tone. In contrast, the Catholic Church after the Second Vatican Council has been demonstrating marked approximation of its own interpretation of religious freedom to the secular one established both on international and national (constitutional) levels. The attitude of the Catholic Church and the Russian Orthodox Church to freedom of conscience is concluded to be a «test» currently revealing fundamental differences in their official positions on the matter. |
