Annotation | The article deals with the responsibility to protect (R2P) and the significance of the EU for the implementation of R2P. The concept of R2P represents one of the most significant normative shifts in international relations since the creation of the UN in 1945. The idea of R2P better embodies the purposes and principles of the UN Charter as well as the basic norms governing international relations, better conforms to the trends of peace and development of the present-day world, and is more conducive to building a just and reasonable new international order. After a brief exploration of the content and the legal status of R2P, the article looks at the role of regional organisations in its implementation. It analyses the role the EU could play in that regard, and offers suggestions on what the EU's most valuable contribution could be. |
