The article examines the constitutional and legal aspects of electoral systems in local elections. This article analyzes advantages and disadvantages of the normative content of the previous electoral systems probated in Ukraine.

The electoral system influences upon the process of local council election forming, the process of mayor’s election in a village, city, town as well as the executive board of the local council, which is responsible for ensuring the  performance of the municipal administration, providing services within the local government system.

The article opens the impact of legal nature of the local council on electoral systems in local elections, options of electoral systems modelling.

The article offers the optimal electoral system in various types of local elections and ways of its legal regulation, as well as the means of improvement of electoral system in various types of local elections in Ukraine. It is given the criteria, which might be followed in the choice of a particular electoral system.
