Annotation The article considers the international legal regime for demilitarization of the outer space. It analyses the historical background of the establishment of the appropriate regime which was formed at the peak of the cold war and the approximate parity of the USSR and the United States forces in the exploration and use of outer space, which influenced the character of the legal regulation of space relationship. The emphasis was made on the features of current differentiated treatment: the full demilitarization of celestial bodies, on the one hand, and the partial demilitarization of space at whole — on the other. The article also investigates the actual effects of functioning of the respective regime, and provides suggestions for its improvement through the adoption of the international legal instrument that would have unified the regime of outer space demilitarization.
